  They were discovered gathering dust at the back of the shoe rack.

  These are reissues of Onitsuka’s “Montreal” running shoes, which were sold in the 1970s; as the name suggests, they were created and named in honor of the Olympics. It was only much later, after reading a magazine, that I learned Onitsuka had manufactured shoes for the early days of Nike (which was originally called Blue Ribbon Sports) and that the tiger stripes on the side were not merely a design element, but a functional feature intended to prevent the shoe from losing its shape and to protect the ankle. …
